The Council of the Anglo-Jewish Association, who held a meeting on Sunday, the
4th November, 1883 desire to convey to you their most cordial congratulations on the great and auspicious event which stands unique in the annals of civilisation. In the celebration of your approaching hundredth birthday are centred all those blessings which now at the evening of your valued life are offered to you by members of every creed and by dwellers in every quarter of the Globe. But it especially behoves us Jews to join in this universal sentiment of
veneration and affection, for it will never depart from the memory of the living, or from the records of history, how persistently you have striven to place your brother Israelites on an equality with their fellow citizens, and how effectively you have pleaded before the rulers of European, Asiatic, and African Countries against the continuance of every form of intolerance and persecution arising from anti-Jewish prejudice.
Such a career, illustrious through its wide-spread benevolence, and revered by all men, is recognised as an example to humanity, and calls forth in our breasts the fervent prayer that the Almighty may prolong your days to witness the accomplishment of the great objects of your life, & to enjoy with serenity of mind and health of body the results of your beneficent labours.
With profound esteem and respect, we have the honour to be, Sir, Yours faithfully.
